Input on varmit opportunities around Walla Walla?
« on: May 17, 2012, 08:18:31 AM »
Headed over last week of June for my bride's quarterly board meeting for her work.  This one will be in Walla Walla.  Have not hunted outside of SW Washington, but have the chance and time to change that now, so looking into different areas and adventures, and the free hotel stay for her meeting just works in my favor that much more.

Wondering about the opportunities for getting out during the day while she is tied-up with the meeting and putting my new .22 mag to work?  Am interested in ground squirrel or simiular sized critters, and of course, wouldn't feel bad about tipping over a coyote either.

Haven't been in that area since the late 70's...man just reading that made me feel old!!  Anyway, are there many public areas or is it mostly private farmlands?   Haven't gotten any maps of the area yet, so just kinda looking for some idea of the lay of the land and what I might be looking at and if it is even worth packing a rifle for the trip, since I would be pretty-much going in to the area cold.

Thanks for any insights!!

Not much in the ground squirrel dept here.  'Yotes are probably your best bet, but they get hunted pretty hard year 'round, so they're not dummies.  If you get a shot better take it quick.  Last year I saw one mousing in a FFTH wheat field at about 300 yards.  Got out of my truck, grabbed by .223 and went to set up on a fence post for a shot.  He hadn't even looked up yet and I thought "this is gonna be sweet".  Then I worked the bolt on my rifle.  He was gone before I could get the bolt closed.  Never even looked in my direction.  He knew EXACTLY what "clack-clack" meant... :chuckle:

You must've been real quiet when shutting your door because that's the other dead give away, now I just leave my door open ;)

We whacked one out at our place last weekend. I think that's why we haven't been seeing as many turkeys around this year. I shot one while turkey hunting last year. We also had a couple chasing fawns last fall.

They're around, that's for sure.
